Rating Points

Dear Club Members

The club committee, on the recommendation of the Match and Grading committee, has made the decision that club members with 15 and more rating points will not be eligible to play in the Wednesday Centennial Cup and Kaitake Plate competitions. However, they can still play on unrestricted nights with those players with less than 15 rating points. In fact, we encourage higher ranked players to play with the “C” grade players on a Wednesday night to foster their development.

The decision was also made that all players with 40 or more rating points will be ineligible to play in the Thurston Cup, Hel-Rimu Plate and Swiss pairs competitions on Thursday. However, one player with over 40 rating can play in the teams events. Players with 40 or more rating points are encouraged to play on a Tuesday night plus they can still play in the Thursday night handicap sessions.

Whilst understanding that 2020 has been a very difficult year and that the NZB made a decision not to impose the annual 20% reduction in “C” points this year (which has affected some players who might otherwise have been below 40 rating points), the committee felt that players who have 40 or more rating points have reached this status by achieving results that has made them surpass this rating. The committee also felt it would be unfair for those players who have achieved 15 rating points or more and were now required to play in Thursday competitions to compete with players with more than 40 rating points. Remembering that a player with 0 to 14 rating points is classified as a “C” player, a player with 15 to 39 rating points is classified as a “B” player and those with 40 or more rating points is an “A” player.

The committee has also discussed the idea of reducing the rating points level from 40 to 30 for next year. If you want to monitor your rating progress it can be calculated using the facility on the NZB Web site.

Yours,

Deane Skelton
